Herman “Makaio” Kuailani, 81
Herman “Makaio” Kuailani of Haiku, Maui passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on February 12, 2021 in Wailuku, Maui.
He is pre-deceased by his lifetime sweetheart, Mary “Aunty Lei” Ishiki; Parents, Simeon Paul Kuailani, of Hana, Maui & Emma Imi Honokaupu, of Kailua, Maui; Brother, Simeon Paul Jr. Kuailani (deceased); Sisters, Rachel Kuailani (deceased), Violet Kuailani (husband-Joseph “Sonny”) Poouahi.
Herman is survived by his Brothers, Samuel (wife-Bella Uwekoolani, deceased), George Kuailani, Kenneth Davis, & Charles Kuailani; Sisters, Frances Kuailani (husband-Joaquin “Joe”, deceased) Kahalehoe, Linda “Ipo” Kuailani (husband-Gene) Kaneapua, Laura Davis, Kehau Kuailani, Kathleen Kuailani, Carol Keanini, Laura Kuailani; including numerous Nieces and Nephews; Caregivers, Tony and Annette Golis.
Uncle Kaio worked in the construction industry as a mason for many years. He also worked alongside, Ken Romkee, building water features throughout Maui.
In his spare time, Uncle Kaio enjoyed doing arts and crafts, with his primary focus, creating Lauhala Hats and Feather Leis. He loved taking daily walks in Haiku and frequently visited Fukushima Store for their famous hot dogs. Uncle Kaio was known to have strong hands and often gave family or friends massages to help ease their aches and pains. He was a man full of knowledge and loved talking stories about the good old days. Uncle Kaio will be missed dearly for his hearty laugh, his Aloha Spirit, that he possessed and shared with all who knew him.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a public drive-thru viewing will be held on March 13, 2021 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Ballard Family Mortuary, Kahului, Maui. Masks are required.
