Benjamin Rivera of Haiku, Maui passed away in his home on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born on January 14, 1938 to Mauricio and Andrea Rivera.
Ben was very athletic and became a 4-Year Letterman for track and football. After graduating from Baldwin High School Class of 1957, he attended the University of Hawaii and became a Football Alumni. Upon his return home, he volunteered as an Assistant Coach for his alma mater in the 1960's and later became the Defensive Coach for the Haiku Vikings in the 70's. Benji was also part of the Maui Sumo Association, working with Jesse Kuhaulua, and reaching the rank of Ozeki.
He was a very hard worker and retired from the Honolulu Gas Company after more than 35 years of service. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing softball for Shirota's, camping, diving and laying net, going cruising around the island and spending time with his family and friends. Ben was described by many as "a good man", full of com-passion, thoughtful, generous, and humble – always ready and willing to lend a hand.
Benjamin is survived by his wife, Feloche Zerna Rivera; Children Cathy (Jim) Rivera-ConCannon, Donna (Edwin) Lucero, Michael Rivera, Brandon Rivera, and Ashley (Alika) Rivera-Seki; Grandchildren Jasmine (Josh) Murray-Lucero, Jeremy Lucero, Makena Rivera-ConCannon, Pete Rivera-ConCannon, Caleb Rivera-Seki and Benjamin Rivera-Seki; Great Grandson Jaryk Lucero; Brother Placido (Patricia) Rivera, sister Anita (Jerry) Hall; and numerous 'ohana and friends.
He is predeceased by his parents Andrea & Pedro Quedding and Mauricio Rivera; and sisters Petra (Basilio) Bautista, Saturnina Rivera Clancy, and Pacita Riley.
Ben's services will be held at Ballard Family Mortuary on Friday, April 22, 2022 from 6pm - 9pm and Saturday, April 23, 2022 from 9am - 12:30pm.
