Anstern John Gouveia, 73

“Tribute to a Cowboy, Rancher and Bull Rider”.

Anstern was born on November 9, 1949 in Pu’unene, Maui, HI (under the kingdom of Hawaii), to Manuel “Boy” Gouveia (Father), and Mathilda “Cassie” P. Freitas (Mother).

He passed away in Maui, HI on September 7, 2023.

He was an excellent horseman and enjoyed living his life in the humble ways of old ways of Hawaii.

He graduated St. Joseph School in 1963 and continued on to graduate from the old Maui High School (Hamakuapoko) class of 1967.

He was the owner and operator of Sleeping G Ranch, Haiku, HI (Camp Maui) where he raised all types of animals including registered Brahman cattle.

Anstern retired from the State of Hawaii, Department of Education in 2012.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Jane Gouveia (Grimes); his sister, Yvonne Dempsey; brother, Ervan Gouveia; his children, Leena Kekiwi, Clinton Gouveia, Diane Kemfort, Kyle Gouveia and Wyatt Gouveia; grandchildren, Keoki Souza, Kennedy Souza, Keane Souza, Keanu Fernandez, Kaeo Gouveia, Kanoe Gouveia, Vailei Gouveia, Star Kemfort and Storm Kemfort; and great grandchildren, Landon Gouveia and Kristian Gouveia.

The family would like to extend a mahalo to Raymond P. Freitas (Uncle), Rose Cambra Freitas (Auntie) for their contributions to Anstern’s upbringing.

There was a family viewing held at Ballard’s Mortuary on September 19, 2023 at 10:00am, cremation followed on September 20, 2023.

On October 7, 2023 at 8:00am an “Urn” wake will be held for immediate family, 9:00 am will be open to public, 11:00am funeral mass at St. Joseph Church in Makawao.
