Sharyn Jo Van Tassell Matin

Sharyn Jo Van Tassell Matin, 77, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2024. Ka'a iho i kai o Ha'enanui, I ka papa holo i'a a ka nui manu. [Reaching the sea of Ha'enanui, in the abundant reef of the flock of birds.]

After a long period of part-time living in Maui, Sharyn retired and moved here full-time. She founded the West Maui Preservation Association which challenged how shoreline developments obtained approval in the North Beach subdivision and helped to take the county's injection wells in Honokowai to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In her final years, she struggled with dementia and moved to Lafayette, Louisiana, to be closer to family. She is survived by her children Victoria VanTassell Nagle and Court VanTassell, her siblings Jon Andersen and Karen Ferguson, her three granddaughters Jordanne Nagle, Jenna Nagle, and Bree Scott, and her three grandsons Calvin, Charlie, and Theo VanTassell. No service will be held as, per her wishes, her children will scatter her ashes at a personal place of reflection. The family requests that those wishing to celebrate her life do so by donating to the Alzheimer's Association.
