Gary Nakama
								Gary Sadamu Nakama was born in Lahaina on September 14, 1952, to Jane and Sadao Nakama. He began his education at Kahului Union Preschool, continuing through Wailuku Elementary School, Iao Intermediate School, and ultimately graduating from Baldwin High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Utah State University.
Gary held various jobs throughout his career before becoming a social worker for the Department of Education, where he dedicated himself to serving others. He married Susan Nagashima, and together they raised two strong, independent daughters.
In his spare time, Gary was an active member of the Jaycees, the Maui Sons and Daughters of the 442nd, Iao Church, and Po’okela Church. He took great pride in these roles and the community he helped to build.
Gary was predeceased by his parents and his older brother, Leebrick Nakama. He passed away on June 7, 2024, in Wailuku, Hawaii, leaving behind his wife, Susan; daughters Jenny (Keola) and Naomi (Andrew); and two grandchildren, Aysen (7) and Ashten (5). He is also survived by his brothers, Randy (Michelle) and David (Sue), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The services will be held at Po’okela Church, located at 200 Olinda Rd, Makawao, HI 96768, on Saturday, July 20, 2024. Family visitations will begin at 8:00 a.m., followed by public visitations at 9:00 a.m. The service will commence at 10:00 a.m. A lunch will be served at the church following the service. Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Valley Isle Memorial Park, located at Maui Loa Dr, 4099 State Highway 36, Haiku, HI 96708.
