Rick Medcalf

RICK MEDCALF
April 5, 1954 ~ June 15, 2025
Richard Jon “Rick” Medcalf, late of Honolulu – previously from Lahaina, Maui and Kailua, Oahu – passed away peacefully on June 15th after a lengthy illness. He was 71 years of age. He was surrounded by family and loved ones, and they are comforted knowing that his earthly suffering is now over.
Rick was born April 5, 1954 in Bellingham, Washington and moved to Hawaii with his family in 1961. He grew up in Kailua, and attended Kailua Elementary and High Schools. Following his graduation, he went to work for his father, Gordon – a widely respected expert in Hawaiiana – at Island Coin Exchange in the Ala Moana shopping center. He then worked with his brother Don at Hawaiian Islands Stamp & Coin in downtown Honolulu along with their brother, David, and sister Cheryl. Later, he went to work for his dad again at Island Coins & Stamps in Lahaina. When his father retired and the store closed, he performed upkeep and maintenance duties at Kapalua Bay Villas on Maui for almost two decades until he was no longer able.
He is survived by his brothers Don and David (Olinda), his sister Julie (Tim) Fuller, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family is particularly grateful to his niece Lori and to his grandnephew, Viliami Penitani, for the care and comfort they provided for Rick during his final months.
Mr. Medcalf was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Arlene, his sister Cheryl and her husband Les Reitfors, Lori’s husband Manu Penitani, and his sister-in-law Samantha.
Rick was a good and honorable man who constantly had a smile on his face and a cheerful attitude. He always would have a kind word to say to you. Rick dearly loved everything about Maui – the ocean, the countryside, and its people. It has been said that he truly embodied the “Aloha spirit” and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Services for Mr. Medcalf will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in his name to the Hawaii Community Foundation (Maui Strong Fund) 827 Fort Street Mall, Honolulu, HI 96813, the Maui Food Bank (mauifoodbank.org/donate/), or to the charity of your choice.
