ROGELIO “ROGER” TACDOL, 85

Rogelio “Roger” Tacdol, 85, of Kahului passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on June 29, 2025. Roger was born on May 7, 1940, in Villa Moncada, Tarlac, the Philippines and was the eldest son of six children. After sailing aboard the SS President Wilson, he was re-united with his father, Herman, on Maui in 1958. His father was previously recruited to Maui by the Hawaii Sugar Planters Association in 1946, in one of the last groups of Sakada.

After working on Lanai at Dole Pineapple and later taking auto mechanics classes at Maui Technical School (presently UHMC), at the age of 23, Roger joined the Hawaii Army National Guard and did his basic training at Schofield Barracks. Roger was later stationed at the Range Marksmanship Rescue Office on Oahu. He actively served with the National Guard from 1961-1963 before returning to civilian life where he started work at Wailuku Sugar Company.

Roger was a boilerman in the sugar mill and later a journeyman welder. He also served as editor of the Unit 2102 (Wailuku Sugar) union bulletin, a contributor to ILWU Local 143’s “Voice of the ILWU” and hosted a local radio program for Ilocano-speaking members on union activities and issues. In 1977, he was appointed acting ILWU Membership Service Director/Business Agent and was later elected to the position, and assisted with contract negotiations, member grievances, workers’ comp cases, member’s pension and social security benefits hearings, and sports events. He retired as Maui Division Director after 25 years of service in the ILWU.

Roger was also appointed to and served on a number of commissions and boards, including member and chairman of the Maui County Planning Commission, member and vice-chair of the Maui County Library Advisory Board, member and vice-chair of the Maui County Salary Commission, member and vice-chair of the Maui County Liquor Commission and member of the Maui Economic Opportunity and Maui United Way Board of Directors.

As a young adult, Roger enjoyed lamalama fishing and playing Paiute with his family, traveling to the Philippines in his later life, and watching sporting events on TV. He was loved by his family and will be missed.

Roger is predeceased by his parents, Herman and Petronila Tacdol, his brothers Fernando “Nando”, and Leopoldo “Leo”, sister Lilia, and his first wife Asae “Alice” Sugahara Tacdol. He is survived by his loving wife Mary Tacdol, sons Roger (Valerie), Darren (Madelyn), and Brad Tacdol, daughter Angel Tacdol, grandchildren Dillon and Dustin Tacdol, sisters Victorina “Vicky” (Ricardo) Mamuad, and Esther (Orlando) Balala Sr.
