Edward S. Hirata

Edward “Ed” Shoichi Hirata, 92, of Wailuku, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2025. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Hisako*, a proud father of two sons Ray (Ruby) and Scott (Caroline), a cherished grandfather to three granddaughters, Rhonda (Ryan) Tengan, Rainelle (Dustin) Leval and Kristine, and a joyful great-grandfather to Reagan. Born to Kazuo and Sueme Hirata of Wailuku, he grew up in a close-knit family, learning early the value of love, humbleness, and hard work. He was the sixth of nine siblings, Stella (Tadashi) Wakamatsu*, Gladys (Rosie) Kobayashi*, Yutaka*, Francis (Norma), George*, Harry (Jane), Albert (Elizabeth)*, and Margaret (Robert*) Namiki, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Ed proudly served his country in the United States Army.
He ran Ed’s Barber Shop in Wailuku, where his steady hands and kind heart left lasting impressions on generations of clients.
A celebration of life service will be held on Friday August 8, 2025 at 4:00pm visitation and 5:00pm services at Wailuku Hongwanji Mission to honor a man who meant so much to so many.
A special thank you to Caroline and the staff of Kula Hospital for bringing him joy, comfort, and company during his final days.
Ed will be remembered for his cheerful spirit, supportive nature, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. We appreciated and loved him deeply. His laughter and stories will be missed beyond words.
