Esther Oishi

Esther Oishi, 97, of Kahului, Maui, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025. She was born on June 7, 1928.

Private services were held.

Esther was born in Puunene and raised in Wailuku. She graduated from St. Anthony High School in Wailuku, attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and earned her teaching degree from Marymount College in Salina, Kansas

She started her teaching career at Paia School and taught at several schools on the Big Island before returning to Maui. She retired after teaching many years as a 5th grade teacher at Kihei Elementary School.

During her retirement, Esther volunteered with the Maui Memorial Medical Center’s Auxiliary group and as a eucharistic minister and on the sweet bread fundraising committee, at Christ the King Church. She enjoyed going on cruises and vacationing in Las Vegas, and enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, crocheting, and watching UH sports.

Esther is pre-deceased by her husband, Darrell Oishi, and her son, Michael Oishi. She is survived by her children, Francine Oishi of Tacoma, WA, Judge Patrick (Janet) Oishi of Seattle, WA, Joan (Jon) Gushiken of Kahului, grandchildren, Alison (Evan Hess) Fankhauser, Isabella Oishi, Alexander Oishi, Timothy Oishi, brother Charles Tokunaga of Kaneohe, and sister, Margaret Chow of Renton, WA.
