Austin Lavoie
Austin Lavoie of Maui originally from New Hampshire. Austin lived a life of quiet strength, humor and Aloha. After college, he joined the Peace Corps and served in Liberia, where he helped sponsor and build a school, homes, and taught as a schoolteacher. He welcomed his first son, Austin or “Ballou” into his life, and enjoyed all the experiences he had in Liberia. He also worked as a foreman at a rubber farm too.
When his service ended, he chose to move to Hawaii. On Oahu Austin worked at the Makaha Inn as a bus boy and taught at Waianae High School while also flipping homes and properties through sheer resourcefulness and determination. He also met the love of his life, Genevieve Lehua Clubb.
Along with his wife Genevieve, Austin eventually made Maui his home. They and their children built their forever home and a cottage together in Kihei . While working to build his home, Austin opened his own business “Austin's Handyman Repair”. He built custom cabinets, installed carpet, did drywall , repaired screen doors and painted homes. He later joined Valley Isle Screen. On Saturdays you would find Austin at the Maui Swap Meet like clockwork. He had his regular spot where people could find a variety of reading glasses, jewelry tools, magnets and fun trinkets. This was his fun job, as he loved talking story with people, making friends and trading vegetables for his wares.
Austin was a man of few words but a generous heart, patient spirit, and quiet humor, always willing to help others. He loved his family, his dogs and the islands that became his home.
He is preceded in passing by his beloved wife, Genevieve Lehua Clubb, daughters Nalani Bena Delima & Lena Sylva. He is survived by his sister Marilyn Nord, children Austin Ballou Lavoie, Nani Kaina, Stephen Clubb & Veronica Helm, 12 Grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren, and his beloved dog, Bowie.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 21st at 4:30pm at Eddie Tam Hall. Family and friends are warmly invited to honor his life and legacy.
A Hui Hou, Papa
