John Wayne Sanderson

John Sanderson entered this world on September 14, 1947, and gently departed on January 19, 2026. For over four decades, Maui was his chosen home to live and dedicate himself to healing and teaching with loving devotion and connection.

John welcomed everyone with patience, warmth, and a deep unhurried presence that made you feel safe being yourself. He moved through the world with a rare kindness and genuine reverence for life. John touched countless lives through his teaching, and his devotion to the art of massage. As the owner of Maui Academy of Healing Arts, he guided and mentored generations of students, not only in technical skill, but in the deeper listening that true healing requires. He believed the body carries wisdom, that touch can be transformative, and that bodywork is as much about compassion as it is about technique. His students remember him as a compassionate counselor, a steady guide, and a man who led by example–humble, grounded, and deeply human.

John's love for Maui ran just as deep. He held the land with respect and gratitude. Maui was not simply where he lived–it was where his spirit felt at home, where his values of peace, generosity, and connection could fully breathe.

Above all, John cherished his family and friends. He is survived by his sister, Janey (Harmon) Alpert; his beloved niece & nephews; Jenny Alpert (daughter Bella Emerson), Aaron (Megan, & sons Tommy & Hudson) Alpert, Dave (Denise) Alpert, along with a vast community of friends, students, teachers, and locals whose lives were forever changed by knowing him.

John's legacy lives on in the hands that heal, in the hearts he softened, and in the quiet reminder that love, patience, and presence are among the greatest gifts we can offer one another in this lifetime.

A celebration of life is planned for: February 20th @ Kam 3, 4pm. Island style pot-luck.
