Robert McCleary
Robert Franklin McCleary passed away on January 5, 2026 in Kahului, Maui after an extended battle with Cronic Lung Disease. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 55 years, Donna L McCleary, MD.
Robert ( Bob) was born in York, PA, on March 28,1944 , son of late William C and Pauline Boyer McCleary. He had a brother, William (d) of Lancaster Pa. and a sister, Doris Ann of CConcord, NC He is survived by his beloved Hanai family-Lewis Gamble, Jennifer Slaughter, Ashley Gamble, and Jacob Gamble of Makawao.
After graduating High School in York Pa, he was drafted into the army and served as Battalion Surveyor in Viet Nam for his tour of duty. Upon return to the states, he sought higher education, met his future wife, Donna, moved to Baltimore where he received an Associate’s degree in Underwater Engineering at Ann Arundel College in Annapolis MD. He was a master diver and loved the ocean.
Robert and Donna moved to Maui upon completion of her training. He worked at various jobs, including surveying, until finally settling on crafting unique wooden children’s toys and furniture as well as helping to design and build their house in Paia.
He was a member of Makawao Union Church for many years where he used his tenor/baritone perfect pitch voice to sing in the choir.
There was so much more to Bob than a few paragraphs can adequately express. He was Loved and he will be sorely missed.
There will be a Celebration of Life at McCleary house on February22,2026. Open house will be from 4-6 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Maui Humana Society would be appreciated ( He loved his Big Dogs).
