John Sakuma

John Masao Sakuma went to heaven on March 23, 2026. He was born in Honolulu, the only child of Isao and Hatsuyo Nitta Sakuma.

He graduated from McKinley High School and the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture on a grant from the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association. He retired as the Manager of the Agricultural Research and Crop Control Department at Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company after more than 35 years of service.

He also retired as a Lt. Colonel with 20 years of service in the active Army and Hawaii Army National Guard.

John loved to travel and was always planning his next trip as soon as he returned home. He was able to visit all the continents and all 50 states. His favorite places to visit were Japan, anything Disney, and San Francisco. His other interest was his amateur radio license which he proudly displayed on his car.

He served as president and then secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Kahului for 50 years. He also was moderator, trustee, and deacon at Kahului Union Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mabel, daughters: Joy Davis and Shari (Scott) Okada, grandchildren: Jasmine (Antonio), Matthew, Steven, Samuel, & Sarah, and a great-granddaughter Luna.

A celebration of life will be held at Kahului Union Church on May 30th. 10:00 visitation and 10:30 service. Burial will be later at Maui Memorial Park.
