Zora Durock
Zora Elaine Durock was born to David Durock and Sadie Medich in South Bend, Indiana, where she spent her childhood. Zora was very proud of her Serbian heritage and enjoyed celebrating the holidays with her large family while growing up. After graduating from high school, she moved to Los Angeles to be closer to her brother who was a well-known movie stunt man, and her sister whose husband played football for the Los Angeles Rams. Zora started her career with AT&T where she worked for 25 years until she retired in the late 1980's. Having been to Hawaii many times on vacation, Zora decided that Maui would be the perfect place to live out her best life. After relocating, she initially worked for Paul Alexander, a successful interior designer, before becoming a “professional volunteer”. For over 20 years Zora volunteered at, and was on the Board of Directors of, the Hui No'eau, Art Maui and was a regular volunteer in the office for the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
In 2002 Zora met the love of her life John Buck – who like her had moved to Maui from California – and they were married in 2007. Zora and John loved Maui Polo and attended almost every game at the Manduke Baldwin Polo Field where Zora was their biggest cheerleader. What brought Zora the most joy however, was listening to Hawaiian Music. She made it a point to see as many Hawaiian music performances at the MACC as possible. In her later years, she and John never missed the Tuesday Ukulele Night at the Pukalani Country Club to hear their favorite group Honey Bun and the Coconuts.
Zora was a wonderful cook, and often entertained friends and family in their gracious Kula home. She will be remembered for her extreme generosity, dependability and commitment to the people and causes she treasured.
Zora is survived by her husband John and his children Tom and Catherine, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased in death by her brother Dick and her twin sisters, Judy and Mitzi. Donations in her honor can be made to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
