Georgia Keenan-Abilay, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 19, surrounded by her loving family, at Silverado Senior Living, in San Juan, Capistrano, California. She was born in Denver, Colorado on October 3, 1936.
Georgia is survived by her sister Lawri/Tom Freeman, three of her four children: Phoenix/Juliet, Therese/Lori, Mark/Jill and John (d:2007), six grandchildren: Chant’e/Gaman, Kanoa, Natalie, Matthew, Leslie and Destinee, and four great-grandchildren: Shailym, Akilah, Tayj and Georgia.
She received her Bachelors in Education from Regis College in Denver, her Master’s in Theology from St. Thomas Seminary, and was Director of Religious Education for the Archdiocese of Denver. In 1983, she became Director of HR at The Ka’anapali Beach Hotel, and then The Royal Lahaina Resort, and in 1990, Director of HR for Rock Resorts Lanai. In 1991, Georgia, along with her late husband Joe Abilay, founded one of Hawaii’s most beloved and iconic restaurants, The Blue Ginger Cafe.
Celebration of Life Services will be held Tuesday, September 29 at ILWU Hall in Lanai City at 6pm.
