Justino F. Tahilan

March 10, 1930 - September 5, 2026

Our dad, Justino F. Tahilan, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2026, at Queen's Medical Center - West O'ahu, surrounded by his children. He was 96 years old.

Dad was born on March 10, 1930, in Badoc, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. He moved to Maui, Hawaii, in 1969, where he spent the rest of his life working hard and providing for his family. Dad held several jobs throughout his life. He worked for Maui Land & Pineapple Company for several years and later retired from HC&S after 25 years of service. While working at HC&S during the day, he also worked nights part-time for Freeman Security. Even after retiring, Dad wasn't ready to slow down. He worked part-time at MEO at the Cameron Center, doing yard work, until he was 80 years old.

Dad loved gardening and took great pride in growing vegetables, which he enjoyed sharing with family and friends. When he wasn't working in his garden, he could often be found meeting his friends at Burger King for lunch. After retirement, he also enjoyed his yearly trips back to the Philippines.

Dad was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Rufina Tahilan; his wife, Juanita Tahilan; his daughter, Agnes Tahilan; and his sister, Damiana Madrid.

He is survived by his daughters, Imelda Balmores (David) and Ofelia Burrill (Howie); and his son, Robert Tahilan (Enriqueta). He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Heizel Manuel (Rey), Daniel Prones (Laurie), Michael Balmores (Rosie), Gabe Balmores, Matthew Burrill (Fiona), Taylor Burrill, Ashley Tahilan, and Jonah Tahilan; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Dad lived a long, happy and hardworking life, finding joy in his family, his garden, his friends, and the simple things he enjoyed. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Memorial service and visitation will be held at Nakamura Mortuary in Wailuku on October 30, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Maui Memorial Park in Wailuku.
