Kill a dog on Maui you get five years in prison and voted off the island as in Hana a few years ago. Being a distracted driver, plead guilty to vehicular homicide and you get a few years of probation. This guy is 71 and has medical conditions (The Maui News, Jan. 21). That’s the excuse? I am 72 and have many medical conditions!
If you want to do someone in don’t use a gun or knife or assault. Run them over and do a few years of probation and lose your license for a while – 25 to 40 percent of drivers don’t have one or insurance.
This is another travesty of justice in Maui where there is no concern for the dead guy, an innocent motorcycle rider.
Lazy prosecutors and lenient judges are reasons this type of behavior continues.
Little or no consequences. It is a proven fact that harsher punishments reduce crime and alter behavior. This culture of no personal responsibility has to stop and we must demand more responsibility from those who feed off the public trough.
