I have been a Kihei resident for over 30 years and support naming the new high school after our trailblazing late U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink.
When I was in high school in the 1960s, there were virtually no athletic scholarships for female athletes. Today, young women who excel at volleyball, basketball, track and field, golf, to name a few, have a chance to attend college, all because of this revolutionary legislation Patsy Mink got through the Congress.
Many young people on the island today involved in playing sports have no idea their grandmothers were denied athletic scholarships. Naming this high school after “Maui Girl” Patsy Mink can instill pride and inspiration for all our young athletes and scholars to keep going after their goals.
