An April 12 letter writer repeats Trump's bragging that over 1.8 million new jobs have been created since he took office, that black and Hispanic unemployment is the lowest in history, that 250 companies have given out bonuses and raises since the tax cut, that border crossings are down 40 percent, that the stock market hit 70 new highs in 2017, and labels CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC and MSNBC as fake news.
First, 1.8 million is the lowest number of new jobs created annually since 2010 (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics). Black unemployment has been declining since 2011. The record low for Latino unemployment was reached in 2006 (Source: Los Angeles Times). There are over 6 million companies in the U.S.
Border crossings have been declining since they peaked in 2000. Experts attribute that to tougher post-911 enforcement and decades of investment in border infrastructure and surveillance technology.
The stock market has been on a bull run since the Great Recession of 2007. Second, except for NBC and MSNBC, which are both owned by Comcast, each of the news channels mentioned are independent, owned by different entities, and operated by hundreds of journalists. A free press is essential to American liberty, but Lenin, Stalin and Trump call it "The enemy of the People."
Is it possible that all of these different professionals are operating in a vast conspiracy to hurt our nominal president, or is it perhaps more probable that Trump himself is the biggest perpetrator of fake news?
