Rolling symbol of hatred didn’t belong in parade
The morning of July 6, I was standing on Baldwin Avenue in Makawao watching the beautiful classic cars go by at the head of the paniolo parade. Suddenly I saw a car that was pure ugliness. It had a Confederate flag painted on the top of the roof and “General Lee” on the side of the roof. The car’s horn played “Dixie,” the theme song of the Confederacy.
That car ruined the parade for me and my black friends. It’s an absolute disgrace that this rolling symbol of hatred, white supremacy, slavery and treason was allowed in the parade. Those responsible for this travesty should resign or be fired.
