Transit-oriented development a model for South Maui
I was inspired by South Maui state Rep. Tina Wildberger’s positive experiences touring Singapore and Hong Kong in seeing how to incorporate transit-oriented development to support affordable housing and livable, sustainable communities (The Maui News, “Viewpoint,” June 28).
We have the opportunity to develop such a specific plan for South Maui in our 2020 community plan update. We can begin by implementing state Rep. Angus McKelvey’s directive to our county transportation department to develop a transit plan and possibly initially use his access to the former sugar cane train for our usage. Coupled with our open space master plan, these starting blocks can occur as we engage the public in a visioning process that will create a Kihei for the 21st century. Go Kihei!
