Disposal of cats was cruel and unnecessary

2 min read

Twenty years ago we rented a condo in Wailea. We discovered a litter of abandoned kittens in the bushes. We knew if we called the animal shelter they would be destroyed. Luckily, we became friendly with a local who was also an animal lover, and a delivery person in the area, and they took the kittens to foster and find homes for. They told us the mother had probably been poisoned.

Over the past few years, we were elated to learn from following Best Friends Animal Society that Maui had come a long way in protecting and trap-neuter-return the community cats on the island. Last year when we rented a condo in the same complex, there were five community cats living nearby that we fell in love with. When we returned this year, we were looking forward to seeing them again. We were heartbroken to learn that they had been disposed of.

Apparently the management and board of the condo felt they were at fault for decreasing the bird population. Yes, cats do occasionally kill birds, but that is they way nature works. I guess the condo forgot they kill mice and rodents also. We love all animals, including birds, but to dispose of these cats was totally cruel and unnecessary.
