Haleakala ‘Star Wars’ has moved to Mauna Kea

1 min read

"Two satellites rocketed into space Wednesday on what the Air Force said was the most ambitious 'Star Wars' experiment yet, testing a plan to destroy hostile missiles by bouncing laser beams off orbiting mirrors.

"One satellite carried a mirror designed to reflect lasers fired from a Hawaiian mountaintop back to a ground target to test the accuracy of such a system" (from The Associated Press, Feb. 15, 1990).

"Hawaiian mountaintop" is referring to Haleakala.

President Ronald Reagan and later President George H.W. Bush wanted to activate a Strategic Defense Initiative, also known as "Star Wars," in Hawaii. Now another development since the scare by North Korea firing missiles. Same situation now shared on Mauna Kea.

Watch the movie "Real Genius." It's about students making a strong laser beam that would be shot from outer space.

May the force be with you. "Star Wars" sequel to Haleakala showing at Mauna Kea.
