Abortion laws don’t foster respect for life

In his letter published on Dec. 7, a writer says outlawing abortion would increase respect for life. Apparently, he is not familiar with the situation in El Salvador, which probably has the strictest anti-abortion laws in the world. There, every miscarriage is potentially a subject of criminal prosecution and many women who miscarry end up in prison for years.

Has the law increased respect for life? The country has hundreds of violent gangs and the highest murder rates in the world, so the answer is obviously no. When embryos and fetuses are valued more than adults and women are forced to give birth to children they can’t afford to properly provide for, the consequences are the opposite of what anti-abortionists say they want.
