In reference to The Maui News article, "Maui Visitors Bureau funded the most generously" (Feb. 29), on behalf of the PGA TOUR's Sentry Tournament of Champions, one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world, our partnership with Maui Visitors Bureau for more than 20 years has been instrumental to the tournament's unprecedented growth and consequent giveback to the community.
The STOC media package that the MVB purchases each year supports the overall marketing of the event and Maui as a destination, which results in community giveback on several levels. In working with MVB, the STOC has donated more than $6.6 million to Maui-based charities through the 2019 tournament.
These generated funds provide support to a number of important local causes in need, such as providing scholarships for students, and created opportunities for our community to participate and volunteer.
Visitors specifically come to Maui to volunteer for the STOC and experience the event firsthand.
Of particular note is Mayor Michael Victorino, who has volunteered for the event since its inception in 1999.
The support of the MVB is vital to the long-term viability of the tournament on Maui and, thus, the charitable contributions it generates for worthy island charities as well as the positive economic impact it provides through the operation and staging of the event.
