With the threat of coronavirus in our community and the unprecedented changes the pandemic has brought to our economy and our way of life, it's clear that local news is more important than ever. That's why I'm writing to urge the management of The Maui News to continue to work collaboratively with the paper's employees now and into the future.
The Maui News has a long tradition of management and frontline staffers working hand in hand to make decisions that help move the paper forward. As someone who worked alongside The Maui News' crew for years, I know firsthand how hard every employee works to put out the best paper possible and fulfill the paper's mission of serving the Maui community with critical news and information. Now is not the time to end that collaboration.
Contract talks are happening right now, and a deal that keeps workers involved in shaping the paper's future is critical. This isn't about a "money grab," but about ensuring that workers continue to have a say in the decisions that impact the paper's future. More than ever, local news is an essential service, and the people doing the work have insight on how to make sure we have an informed, engaged community. Their voice should be heard.
