I am truly dismayed with Ogden Newspapers, owners of The Maui News.
It has been many years since employees have received any raises! When times were tough years ago, benefits were cut with a promise of snapback, but that never happened.
Now, there is no contract and only rolling furloughs enable the paper to be published. It is an amazing tribute to the reporters who cover Maui County news, that they have continued to provide outstanding coverage for stories that do get printed. Their dedication is much appreciated by readers.
From Ogden's mission statement, "Our rich heritage of newspapering combined with a company-wide commitment to high journalistic standards, position us to continue to uphold the values of excellence and service for decades to come."
To get the best, you must pay a fair wage and honor commitments. Ogden Newspapers CEO Nutting, as owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, you certainly do that for your team. Please do that for our valued "home team," The Maui News staff. Give them a fair contract and get them back to work!
