Clean up records to grow voter turnout numbers
An idea for increasing Maui voter turnout in future elections.
At our home, the Maui County Clerk could increase voter turnout from 66 percent to 100 percent. For the four previous elections (2018, 2016, 2014 and 2012), we returned our younger son’s yellow card to the County Clerk with the note “no longer at this address.”
In this election cycle, we signed and returned our two new registration forms, and shredded our son’s registration form. He and his older brother both attended college on the Mainland and both have lived there ever since.
When the primary ballots were mailed, we still received three ballots even though the county only had two signatures on file for our household. We shredded one ballot and mailed back two.
After the general election is over and prior to the 2022 elections, it may be prudent for the county clerk to clean up the records — for all voters that do not send in a signature card, a primary ballot and a general election ballot, they should be removed for the list of registered voters.
