MAGA meaningless platitude as expressed

2 min read

MAGA? As a child, I was taught that the Statue of Liberty, beckoning the tired and the poor, made America great. I was taught to "treat others as we would be treated," was close to a foundational tenet. That name calling and lying and bullying was unacceptable in anyone, including those in high places.

I have heard from some, "Well, I don't care for his style. I wish he would tweet less. Still, he's doing a great job!"

He does tell us he's doing a great job. Most of the world doesn't think so.

If "Making America Great Again" means forfeiting our character and judgment for braggadocio and falsehood, most of us are unwilling.

If "Making America Great Again" means, "I want what I want . . . and I don't care what the rest of you want," then most of us will (eventually) recoil.

If "Making America Great Again" is seen as a Machiavellian scheme to fashion a past that for multitudinous reasons no longer exists, wisdom will demur.

If "Making America Great Again" is a slogan without the blood, sweat and tears -- and sacrifice -- we once understood was necessary, then greatness will never be achieved.

The greatness of our nation lies in our unselfish character, committed to liberty and justice for all. And the words we use, and the honesty we strive for, are not merely style, they are part of our substance.
