When the ballots are tallied and the outcome is announced, I hope all of you will reflect on what current county leadership has brought upon us during this campaign.
The opposition is using fear and misinformation, not rational debate, in its attempt to defeat what would be a few modest charter change proposals and select "progressive" (compared to regressive?) council candidates.
Consider the recent mailer featuring a beautiful child on one side who would have to live in a county where she would have no voice in local government should the managing director charter proposal be adopted -- by voters of all things. Her civic life would exist under dictatorship, one which would ensnare future mayors, confining them to "ribbon-cutting." I doubt any of them have even read the proposal.
COVID-19, economic insecurity, our national madness, growing/open racism, fear of "others" (fear of a competent/consistent management team helping a mayor to be effective?), increased gun sales and the real threat of imminent civil unrest, distrust of the electoral process (insecurity of ballots, alleged voter fraud and foreign interference), on top of four years of destruction of our cherished democratic institutions, including court packing form the backdrop to the opposition's cynical communication pieces and the backbone of the mayor's strategy to "win."
What kind of leaders are these? Not the kind I want elected to local government in the future.
