Yesterday, the Hawaii Department of Health announced at the mayor's COVID update press conference that in just the past several weeks, a Brazilian variant is beginning to displace the California variant.
The DOH gave little in the way of details. They did not disclose how many cases or what percentage of cases the Brazilian variant represents, nor what islands are involved.
The Brazilian P.1 variant is 2.5 times more infectious than the original variants and yet the DOH did not even disclose which Brazilian variant is present.
The DOH's lack of disclosure is disturbing, and yet what I find even more disturbing is the fact that the press did not ask a single question concerning this variant. If the press does not hold our officials responsible for delivering open and honest government, who will?
