Council Member Mike Molina let me know that the Commission on Healing Solutions for Homelessness had been recently re-created and efforts were again beginning to solve problems on Maui resulting from homelessness.
I appreciate solutions to help to homeless people. But how can the county not enforce basic laws? Stealing shopping carts is a crime, littering is a crime, abandoning vehicles is a crime, public defecation and urination is a crime and threatens the public health of all of us.
Those who desecrate our beautiful island should be held accountable, homeless or not.
Would it be possible for the county to require those creating the mess (under supervision) to do litter pickup along our highways and beaches, or other related community service that is needed due to what they carelessly leave behind? If one takes away from the community, one should be required to give back to the community.
How about the public health hazards created by discarded drug paraphernalia tossed along the sidewalks? How about the businesses that are hurt by homeless encampments nearby? Potential patrons hesitate to enter businesses due to the unsavory environment and fear of harassment by encampment habitants. This is not what local businesses need to help them survive.
