Was a stock photo of protesters on Mauna Kea really the best image you could come up with for the wire-service story on the recent action by the Spanish courts to stop construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope in the Canary Islands?
Then, you make matters worse with the caption, which reads: “Protesters block vehicles from getting to the Thirty Meter Telescope groundbreaking ceremony site at Mauna Kea. A judicial decision from Spain's Canary Islands has put a halt on an alternative plan to build a giant telescope unpopular in Hawaii, which is the preferred location.”
Yes, TMT is unpopular with the protesters. But many native Hawaiians, as well as Hawaiians by choice, support TMT wholeheartedly, on cultural, ecological, scientific and economic grounds.
Its mission converges with the ancient seafarers who navigated by the stars. It creates huge educational opportunities for our keiki. It represents a huge investment in our future without surrendering our aina to the ravages of excessive tourism.
Please do not help perpetuate the Big Lie that the protesters speak in the name of Hawaii Nei.
