Fascinating civics lesson provided by recall petition
I want to thank The Maui News for the fascinating civics lesson this past month on Maui’s “recall process.”
The leaders of the recall petition knew they had to get valid signatures of 21,586 registered voters, but in the end, they only could scrape up 1,564.
They knew they had no chance, then they have the nerve to claim, “no matter what the outcome is, the people win. We win because we stood up for what we know is right.” Even though they are complete failures, they still cling to their mistaken beliefs.
After a month of trying to sign up dissatisfied supporters, they came up over 20,000 signatures short.
The result was not surprising, as the mayor received over 27,000 votes in the November 2018 election when he beat his opponent by 5,000 votes.
Mike Victorino is the face of Maui now, a well-liked family man, a proud father of two sons and a true and trusted community servant.
