It's sad to see what has become of Maui in the past couple of years.
If awards were given out for trash along roadways and beach access points or shopping carts filled with trash left wherever, the island of Maui would be considered a world-class contender for such awards.
No doubt, the island’s homeless problem is a prime contributor to the messes we see in our travels. North Kihei Road along Sugar Beach is an absolute pigsty and is home to homeless living in cars or impromptu camp sites.
Honoapiilani Highway near Ukumehame Beach Park is another garbage dump for the homeless. The "top of the heap" would have to be the area around Walmart and Target, especially at the corner of Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way (Airport Access Road) and Pakaula Street.
It is time, really past the time, for the county to address this issue.
The problem is not going to go away on its own and will only continue to worsen.
A good start would be to utilize some of the workforce available at the prison and go around cleaning up these eyesores on a regular basis.
Ask those folks who volunteered to clean up a couple of weeks ago up along Sugar Beach if a one-time effort makes much of a difference.
