To the person who wrote in with advice for our COVID recovering-mayor: You are dead on. I applaud your honesty and openness regarding the situation here on Maui.
The only thing that would ever keep anyone protected from COVID is physical distancing. Distancing is 100 percent effective, even more effective than the so-called vaccines which are only 50-95 percent effective. After all, if someone has COVID and you don't go near them, you can't get COVID from them. Guaranteed. Ordinary masks have been proven to be useless against COVID. They do nothing to keep anyone safe. So, what does the mayor and governor do? Require useless mask-wearing and de-emphasize physical distancing. Brilliant.
We are now at the point where COVID has become, or is becoming, less potent. Yes, those with compromised immune systems are still at risk and should take every precaution. But healthy folks should get back to a normal life. The typical COVID experience now for healthy folks is usually very mild and not even close to be life-threatening.
Many countries are beginning to lift all COVID restrictions and are returning to a pre-COVID life. We need to do that as well. The pandemic is over.
