The Maui County Council wisely approved a resolution urging federal lawmakers to grant Hawaii a temporary waiver from "The Jones Act".
This century-old law was meant to protect U.S. shipping by requiring all shipping between U.S. ports be built, flagged and crewed by the U.S., which greatly increases costs. This is why until recently Hawaii was importing about 25 percent of its oil from Russia until the recent ban during the Russia/Ukraine war.
It is imperative that our Hawaii congressional delegation (Sens. Brian Schatz, Mazie Hirono, and Reps. Ed Case, Kai Kahele) waive the Jones Act to allow domestic oil and gas imports to provide some relief for Hawaii families, and not depend upon unstable regimes.
