The perception that Russia undermined our democracy in the 2016 election along with Putin's decision to invade Ukraine has provided an opportunity for the United States to strike back at Putin with economic sanctions.
These economic sanctions include not allowing United States financial systems to facilitate Russian trade with the Russian response of forcing trade settlements in rubles, decreasing the demand for the United States dollar, thereby devaluing it.
