Big donations cause inequality in political races

2 min read

Standing in front of the Upcountry community recently, her voice strong, Nara Boone, running for the Paia-Makawao-Haiku council seat, showed herself to be a person with grassroots integrity.

"It's time to take big money out of local politics," she said. "It's time to stop allowing our lives to be dictated by foreign corporations and off- island investors. It's time to focus on our families and our quality of life."

She knows big money causes an inequality in political races. There is a huge disparity between how much money is being raised between campaigns.

For example, Boone has raised less than $16,000 while U'u Hodgins, the candidate funded by the Oahu Super PAC Be Change Now, has had almost $130,000 to spend, and that does not include her two recent Honolulu fundraisers.

Why is a Maui candidate in Honolulu raising money? Why are council candidates John Pele and Buddy Nobriga doing it as well? Each of these candidates are pitted against a progressive candidate quite intentionally by this Oahu-based Super PAC, which is the voice of the Carpenter's Union, a union that doesn't like that the progressive majority on council when it voted for a moratorium on new hotels being built, and which is facing them down on new developments.

Money should not determine this race.

Nara Boone, a wahine of integrity, has a solid community behind her that money can't buy. This is the kahea; we need her elected. Our progressive council cannot be lost. Vote for Boone.
