Yes, Maui has major issues to be addressed.
Litter along our Maui roads might not be at the top of the list, but it is important.
Even better, we can fix it.
Trash scattered along state and county roads is intolerable. Visiting friends remark: "Such a beautiful island that is so trashed."
Maui County Code Section 10.68.070 provides truck beds carrying loose materials must be covered to prevent those articles from flying out. Garbage, including plastic bags full of waste, is coming from trucks with uncovered beds along with other indiscriminate littering/dumping of trash along Maui's roads.
I have not heard back after leaving repeated messages with the state Department of Transportation Maui office and Mayor's office. Officials, please take a drive and see the trash along Hansen Road; major highways from Kahului/Wailuku to Wailea/Makena and Lahaina all the way to Honolua; Wailuku to Kula and Kahului to Paia.
The heroes of Maui are the Adopt-a-Highway volunteers, but they are unable to keep up.
Between enforcing the Maui County Code and state and county consistent cleanup efforts, I would hope Maui's roads could be representative of our beautiful, world-class destination for visitors and residents to savor.
