Litter, abandoned cars ignored along highway
I’m writing after just returning from the Kahului Airport. We live in Wailea, so we make this trip often via the Piilani Highway.
Once again, I was saddened to see the tremendous amount of litter and the abandoned cars along the way.
It was embarrassing to have to explain to our visiting guests that this has been an ongoing problem that is not being addressed.
I have called the state highway division myself and they confirmed that it was their responsibility. Yet, they have still not addressed the problem.
I was also told by the state that abandoned cars are the responsibility of the county. And apparently, to my surprise, there is an allocation in the budget for the removal of these cars.
So, why haven’t they been removed?
I was pleased to see that you have received other letters regarding these issues.
I believe this is going to take a collected effort to get the attention of our elected officials, especially the mayor, so that we can once again be proud of our beautiful island.
