Having read about the new committee assignments for the recently elected County Council, perhaps one of those committees could take on the growing disaster taking place along the shoreline of the west side.
From the encampment at the southern end of the bypass in Lahaina, through Olowalu and all the way to the beginning of the pali, the hundreds and hundreds of abandoned/stripped/stolen cars, both mauka and makai, is a disgrace.
For an island that claims to take such pride in caring for the environment, this a huge black eye. Aside from how bad it looks, consider all the fluids and chemicals that constantly leak out of these wrecks and flow directly into the ocean anytime it rains.
Time and time again, we read that the reef at Olowalu is extremely vital to the future, yet the county has allowed a junkyard to take root on its shoreline. They banned certain sunscreens to protect the reefs yet turn a blind eye to this mess.
The new council needs to come up with a plan and implement it now. No hearings, no studies, no consultants and no more excuses.
Do what you were elected to do.
