Many in this country sleep through change

There is a large minority in this country who are "slept."

What is "slept?"

I have only a vague sense of people who, like Rip van Winkle, slept for years while the world around them changed.

Maybe someone with more acute thinking can better define "sleepness," as well as explain the Age of Endarkenment our country is experiencing.
