Perhaps now is the time for Jim Kelly of Hawaiian Electric to press the DOE to spend more research and development on the only really viable clean energy resource, instead of wasting time and money on intermittent sources such as solar and wind turbines.
France generates 70 percent of its energy from nuclear power and has never had a serious accident or a release of radiation. It even sells electrical power to neighboring countries.
China is testing a nuclear power reactor based on the thorium fission cycle instead of uranium and cooled with molten salt. It can be designed to be fail safe, more efficient than the U235 cycle, has short-lived waste and construction cost is a fraction of current reactor costs. They plan to open a commercial grade reactor by 2030.
That is the future.
