In 1925, a baby just a few months olds named Momi was given to her widowed Tutu, Alice Wong, to be raised along with several of Tutu's own young children in a plantation house in Spreckelsville.
Momi's Tutu believed, as all mothers and grandmothers do, that babies are the most precious gifts in this world, and Tutu raised this baby named Momi as her very own.
So, when Momi was growing up alongside her aunties and uncles, she, like them, referred to Tutu as "Mama."
Young Momi never left her Tutu's side and learned everything from cooking, cleaning and drying fish to swimming to caring for Momi's younger cousins as she got older.
When Momi was old enough to get married and have children and grandchildren of her own she also, deservedly, inherited the title of "Mama" and "Tutu."
Today and every day, we honor our tutus as well as all mothers and grandmothers who still believe we are the most precious gifts in this world.
