In The Maui News April 20 edition, there was a story about how the County of Maui faces a $145,000 fine for things not done properly that caused the death of firefighter Tre' Evans-Dumaran during the flooding in Kihei in January.
It's not the county that pays the fine, it's the taxpayers.
There is no penalty for the supervisors or leaders who failed to adequately see that the supervisors had the proper training. They are the ones who failed at their job, not the taxpayers.
Every now and then, there is a story in the paper about punishment doled out to police officers who committed an infraction of some rule or other and were suspended or had a demerit put in their personnel file.
They paid a penalty for their actions or inactions, not someone else.
Why are the taxpayers fined for an infraction of the leaders?
We, the taxpayers, are the ones paying. The same thing is going to happen when school children start getting injured and killed at the Kihei roundabout.
State and county politicians make a deal to open the school with indemnification agreements, but when the lawsuits come, and they will, when kids get injured or killed, we the taxpayers will pay the money for the intentional bad decisions of the politicians.
