A regular correspondent to The Maui News who writes surprising (yet ironically predictable) letters recently submitted a piece noting that through use of a telescope, Galileo was able to establish that the Earth is not the center of the universe, a breakthrough insight for which Galileo was put under house arrest for contradicting religious dogma to the contrary (“Why people should question some science,” July 14).

So far so good.

However the author concludes that if we look through the modern equivalent of a telescope (science) today, we would realize climate change “is one of the biggest hoaxes ever perpetrated on the world.”

My takeaway: It’s important to look through the correct end of a telescope; otherwise one’s view of the world becomes narrow and distorted.
