After anticipating the demise of The Maui News, and what it would mean to Maui, I was thrilled to see that discussions may start to save it.
I had actually lost hope that we could hang on to the medium that has given us a common set of facts.
Over the last 100 years, The Maui News has written the first draft of Maui's history.
I am glad that the owners have chosen to get out of the way so it can be saved.
The paper has already become a thin shadow of its former self. Often, we are finding out late -- or not at all -- about county government actions. And not much is apparently happening at the circuit court anymore.
The tiny remaining staff has hung on, doing what they can, with what they got. I thank them for their tenacity, professionalism and evident care for our community.
If we want the paper to return to its former glory, if we want it to really give us the news of Maui we need, then the paper's editorial staff is going to have to grow.
It has to be big enough to truly cover our amazing community. That will only happen if we -- the Maui community -- invest in The Maui News.
