The tragic fire in Lahaina has elevated our concerns over the many areas near neighborhoods that are overgrown and present a clear fire risk to the surrounding areas.
We live in Kihei and there are many privately owned tracts of land that are thick with dry grass, kiawe trees, haole koa and other dense fuels.
The county would be well served if our government would take action, and initiate a process that could lead to these fire hazards being reduced. We don't need another conflagration.
The 2021 Report on Wildfire Prevention made this very clear. Will we wait for the next tragic fire, or will we take some initiative and get some of the most pressing areas cleaned up to give us some assurance we won't be seeing another area burn up?
This is a time for action, not sitting on our hands and waiting for another report that will be filed on a shelf.
