Could there be an exception to the application process for the Kaulana Mahina project below Wailuku Heights?
This project consists of 324 multifamily rental units and the first phases are near completion. After the devastating fires in Lahaina and Kula, there is enormous need for housing. It seems that this project, which is centrally located, could meet some of the longer-term housing needs of those displaced by the fires.
There should be an exception to the lottery to give priority to those firemen who lost their homes, first responders and fire evacuees that are now housed in hotels in Kaanapali.
The general public can be accommodated in later phases of the project and whatever restrictions for income levels waived for this initial period.
Although the deadline to pick up applications has passed and the submission date is this week, Oct. 29, at 5 p.m., there should be governmental intervention to address this possible solution to some of the housing needs of those that loss their homes in the August fire.
Hopefully, those involved in the project, Legacy Partners, Pier Management Hawaii LLC and Schatz Collaborative, LLC and the state and county governments have already been addressing these exceptions. If not, the public needs to get involved immediately.
